EAS' Patrick Fulton serves as science advisor for How to Read a Rock, Vol. 1

A new graphic novel/comic book titled:  How to Read a Rock, Vol. 1. was recently published online and is now available for FREE: https://joidesresolution.org/activities/how-to-read-a-rock-vol-1/

Written and illustrated for intermediate, middle school, and early high school students by the highly acclaimed and award-winning children’s book team of writer Kevin Kurtz and illustrator Nicole Kurtz (they are not related), this book is a funny, slightly irreverent, but scientifically accurate guide to how scientists learn about the Earth by studying rocks! Our own Assistant Professor and Croll Sesquicentennial fellow Patrick Fulton served as science advisor and fact-checker. This issue focuses on actual cores of rock and sediment drilled by the R/V JOIDES Resolution that tell the story of one of the most catastrophic events of the last 20,000 years.

The collaborations on this and subsequent volumes support the scientific research organization the International Ocean Discovery Program’s (IODP) education and outreach efforts, which are funded by the National Science Foundation.
