New online Earth science outreach effort from PRI

PRI has launched a major new free online learning platform designed to help anyone in the United States – from K-12 and college-level students and educators to the general public – learn about the Earth where they live. The site is headed by PRI's Director of Science Communications and Cornell EAS Adjunct Associate Professor, Jon Hendricks (PhD '05).

Earth@Home™ is rich with interactive content about Earth and its life, with a focus on geology, paleontology, climate, and the connections among Earth’s systems. The major components of the new online platform include regionally-based guides to Earth science, an online, open-access Earth science textbook, and virtual fieldwork experiences that will bring Earth science to the online classroom. The site also contains the Digital Atlas of Paleontology, including an extensive teaching collection of online 3-D specimens an online paleontology textbook, which have already been used extensively during the pandemic in undergraduate paleontology lab classes across the country. The new platform represents a major expansion and refocusing of PRI’s online Earth science educational content, which has been growing over the past decade.

The first phase of Earth@Home™ launched on August 24 in time for use in online classrooms this fall. PRI plans to expand the content regularly over the next 2 years.
