Harnessing the vast offshore wind energy resource

Sara C. Pryor, Professor in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and Rebecca Barthelmie, Professor in the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, have started work on a new research project designed to unlock the power of the wind along the US eastern seaboard.

The project is jointly funded by the U.S Department of Energy and NYSERDA. It will provide information to wind farm developers and help ensure that this massive energy resource is harnessed at the lowest possible cost of energy. The project is entitled ‘Reducing LCoE from offshore wind by multiscale wake modeling’ and will run for 2 years.

The project leverages Professor Barthelmie’s extensive experience in offshore wind energy development in Europe, and recent advances by Professor Pryor in developing more accurate models of wind turbine wakes.

Sixteen lease areas have already been released for offshore wind turbine deployments and according to Professor Pryor many more are in the pipeline. “Our research and other projects funded under this initiative will enable us to harness the power of the wind and propel New York and other states towards their carbon neutral energy supply goals.”
