Humphrey Fellow and EAS: Mongolian subsurface resources discussed

Monday, May 19, 2014

In a yurt at Northeast Elementary School left to right are: BEE Grad Student Bahareh Hassanpour Guilvaiee, Boldkhuu Nanzad, Larry Brown, and Larry Cathles

Boldkhuu Nanzad, Mongolian Deputy Director for the Fuel Policy Department, Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, is one of Cornell's Hubert H. Humphrey Fellows in the CALS International Programs for the 2013-14 academic year.  During his time at Cornell, Nanzad has assisted Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Professor Larry Cathles and Wold Professor John Thompson in their co-taught course - Fundamentals of Energy and Mineral Resources. The course provides an overview of resource types in the context of the Earth’s atmospheric evolution, rifting, mantle convection, and hydrologic cycle. The processes of resource accumulation are described in terms of simple chemical and physical principles and in the societal contexts of supply, demand, and sustainability.

Boldkhuu has also met on several occasions with EAS Chair and Professor Larry Brown on possible future collaboration between Cornell and Mongolia. Their research is of mutual interest and could open doors for researchers across campus.
